Initially known as Andersen Consulting, Accenture was established in 1989 as the consulting division of Arthur Andersen. In August 2000, as a result of a conclusion of the International Chamber of Commerce, it broke all contractual ties with its parent company. It therefore avoided being tainted by the many accounting scandals — most notably, that of Enron — that destroyed its former parent over the ensuing two years.
On January 1, 2001, Accenture adopted its current name, and on July 11, 2001 it became a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Accenture operates in the management consulting and technology services sectors.
