Almeria

Province/Town in Andalucia, Southern Spain.

Almería is located in the region of Andalusia, Spain (Andalucía, España). The population of its capital (also named Almeria) is is about 175,000, while the total population in the province is 510.000 habitants.

It is situated at the south east of Spain. Boundary with Granada and Murcia provinces, Almeria has a total extension of 8.774 Km2, 219 Kms of coast. It is very montainous areas, with several high mountains areas (Part of Sierra Nevada, Sierra Filabres, Sierra Maria and Sierra Alhamilla). It is the most sunny province of Spain with 3100 hours of sun per year.

It has been chosen to host the XVth Mediterranean Games - Almería 2005.

The desert landscape and climate that characterises part of the province made it an ideal setting for Western films, a feature that was especially taken advantage of beginning in the sixties. Because of the increasing demand for these locations on the part of the world's best film directors, quiete a number of Western towns were built near the Desert of Tabernas. Here, among others, films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars were shot.

The most important economical motor is the production in greenhouses. Millions of tons of all king of vegetables are exported to Europe and other parts of the world each year. The tourism is also an important source for its economy, due to the sunny of the area, and also to its touristics areas as Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, Almerimar, Vera or Cabo de Gata.

Some important activities are performed in the province of Almeria. German-Spanish Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory is one of the most importants of Spain after the located in Canary Islands. French Michelin tire business has an important research center in Cabo de Gata. In Tabernas there is an important solar energy research center ( PSA).

The most important river is Rio Grande (Large River), which is located near to Granada in the Alpujarras. The Beninar presure, which is located near to Darrical, gives part of the water needed in the production in greenhouses.
