Anawrahta

Anawrahta (1044-1077), also known as Anoratha, was the first ruler of kingdom of Pagan, now part of Myanmar. He made a pilgrimage to Ceylon, returning to convert his country to Theravada Buddhism. He was successful - Theravada became the dominant religion in Myanmar within two centuries.

Anawrahta also built the famous Shwezigon pagoda, and took the Mon king Manuha prisoner.

His rule was usurped by a general called Kyanzittha, who fell in love with one of Anawrahta's wives.

Anawrahta Street in Rangoon is named after him.
