Anti-Confederation Party

The Anti-Confederation party was a movement in Nova Scotia led by Joseph Howe to repeal Canadian confederation which was initially highly unpopular in the province. In 1867 Anti-Conderates won 36 out of 38 seats in the provincial legislature and formed a government under William Annand.

Federally, in the 1867 Canadian election, the party won 18 of Nova Soctia's 19 seats in the Canadian House of Commons. Britain, however, refused to allow Nova Scotia to secede and in 1869 Howe was persuaded to join the Cabinet of Sir John A. Macdonald leading to the movement's collapse.
