Asama is the sole service running on the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Nagano Shinkansen). It began running in 1998 for the Nagano Olympics. The only train type on the line is the E2 Series.
The word asama (浅間) in Japanese derives from a mountain near Karuizawa in the Nagano prefecture.
