Auckland Islands
The Auckland Islands form a sub-antarctic archipelago of New Zealand 465 kilometres from the South Island port of Bluff and lie between the latitudes 50° 30′ and 50° 60′ south and longitudes 165° 50′ and 166° 20′ east. The main island has an approximate land area of 51 000 hectares.
Now uninhabited, they saw an unsuccessful settlement in the mid-19th century: an attempt to set up a community based on agriculture and on whaling.
