Basava brought a social transformation which is often referred as "revolution" for that he changed the lower caste people in to a higher thinking of god or siva.
Basavanna was also a part of "Bhakti Pantha" of 12th century and one of the main figures with his contemporary lingayata or blessed people. He and his followers with Allama defined a new way of looking at god and life with numerous "Vachanas" or sacred hymns.
He lived in present day "Karnataka" State of India.
