Although bandmates Peter Hook and Stephen Morris also contributed lead vocals, Sumner emerged reluctantly as the band's permanent lead vocalist and lyricist.
In 1989, Sumner joined up with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr on their Electronic project.
While a member of Joy Division, Sumner also performed under the names Bernard Albrecht and Bernard Dicken.
