Beverly Perdue

Beverly Perdue, a Democratic politican, is the current lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina and the first female to hold that office.

Perdue holds a Ph.D. in public administration; she worked in both public schools and health care before entering politics. Perdue was, for a number of years, a member of the North Carolina General Assembly, including five terms in the state Senate and two terms in the state House. In 2000, she became the first female lieutenant governor in North Carolina history when she defeated Betsy Cochrane in the general election.
