Bridget Driscoll
On August 17, 1896, Bridget Driscoll, became the first road fatality in the world. She was a 44 years old mother of two, She and her teenage daughter were on their way to see a dance performance at Crystal palace in London. A car struck her as they crossed the palace grounds. Witnesses said that the car was going at "tremendous speed". It may be going 12.8 km/h. The driver, a young man, was Arthur Edsell, who was giving free rides to demonstrate the new invention, and, according to some, trying to impress a young female passenger.
After a six-hour inquest, the jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death", while the Coroner said "This must never happen again".
