The city was formed in 1973 when the city of Galt merged with the towns of Preston and Hespeler.
In 1986 Toyota opened a plant in Cambridge that employs 3500 people and it is by far the city's largest employer, although several other industrial companies also call Cambridge home.
Sattelite campuses of Conestoga College and the University of Waterloo (opening September 2004) are located in the city.
