Cambridgeshire is a county in England, bordering Lincolnshire and Norfolk to the north, Suffolk to the east, Essex to the southeast, Hertfordshire to the southwest, Bedfordshire to the west and Northamptonshire and Peterborough to the northwest. Its population is 553,600 (2000 estimate) and 730,000 (2002 EEDA estimate) when Peterborough is included. The county town is Cambridge.

Cambridgeshire today is the product of several local government unifications. In 1965 the county of Cambridgeshire (much smaller that the present county, and centred on the city of Cambridge) was united with the Isle of Ely (located in the north-east of the present county to create the 'County of Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely'. In 1974 this entity was combined with neighbouring Huntingdon and Peterborough to form Cambridgeshire as we know it.
Today cambridgeshire is divided into several districts - Cambridge, East Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire. Until 1998, Peterborough was a district, but now is a unitary authority.
Cambridgeshire police and fire services still cover Peterborough, and it is included with Cambridgeshire for ceremonial purposes.
Cambridgeshire is twinned with Kreis Viersen in Germany.
