Canadian slang
Canadian slang is words or phrases of slang exclusive or from Canada.
List of Canadian slang words or phrases:
- 2-4 -- a case of 24 beers
- 26er -- a 26oz bottle of alcohol ("a 26er of vodka")
- 40 -- a 40oz bottle of alcohol (see Forty pounder)
- alcool – grain alcohol; from French, but pronounced as if an English word
- Canuck -- Canadian
- Click -- Kilometre
- Deke, deke out -- to feint, to trick or avoid someone ("to deke out of a meeting")
- Dick, dick all -- nothing
- Dogan – a Catholic; abusive, and now dying out
- Forty pounder -- a 40oz bottle of alcohol (see 40)
- gettone – in Toronto and environs, foosball; pronounced roughly as in Italian
- Ghetto blaster -- A portable stereo system. The term was common throughout North America at one time, but is at present common in Canada.
- goof – cheap sherry or fortified wine
- Grit – member of one of the federal or provincial Liberal parties
- Hogtown -- The city of Toronto
- Hoser: a mild insult
- Homo -- homogenized (as in homo milk)
- K (pronounced 'kay') -- Kilometres or kilometres/hour
- Loonie -- Canadian one dollar coin
- Mickey -- a 13oz bottle of alcohol ("a mickey of vodka")
- Mountie -- A member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
- Newfie -- A person from Newfoundland
- The Peg -- Winnipeg, Manitoba
- Pogey -- welfare
- R.C. -- A member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police ("I was pulled over by the R.C.'s")
- The Rock -- Newfoundland (Also used for Vancouver Island on the west coast)
- Toonie -- Canadian two dollar coin
- Tory – member of the defunct Progressive Conservative Party
- Twofer, two-four -- A case of 24 beers (see 2-4)
- Van -- Vancouver
- Vic -- Victoria
- Yankee -- All Americanss
