Chamaecyparis formosensis Chamaecyparis lawsoniana Chamaecyparis obtusa Chamaecyparis pisifera Chamaecyparis taiwanensis Chamaecyparis thyoides |
The Genus Chamaecyparis is one of four genera within the Family Cupressaceae that have the common name cypress — the others being the superficially similar Cupressus, and the rather less similar Taxodium and Glyptostrobus. There are five or six species of Chamaecyparis, depending on taxonomic opinion; C. taiwanensis is treated by many as a variety of C. obtusa.
Another species which used to be included in this genus, as Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, has now been transferred on the basis of strong genetic and morphological evidence back to Cupressus nootkatensis (the name it was originally described under in 1824), or alternatively to the newly created genus Xanthocyparis. The ITIS page does not appear to have been updated yet.
