Daman and Diu

Daman and Diu. These were former enclaves belonging to Portugal. Till 1987 it was part of the Union Territory of Goa,Daman & Diu. But in 1987, Goa achieved statehood. Gujarati is the major language spoken here, although old timers do know Portuguese.

Daman

Daman is on the western coast of India surrounded by Gujarat and north of Maharashtra. Daman lies on the river Daman-Ganga. Major industries have factories here. Closest railway station is Vapi (7 kms). It is also famous for its beach and Portuguese architecture and Church.

Diu

Diu is an island off the southern coast of Gujarat. It is famous for its old Portuguese Cathedral. It is also a fishing town. The Indian Air Force has an air base here.

Portuguese territories included Goa, Daman & Diu Dadra and Nagar Haveli in India and Hormuz (Ormuz) in the Arabian Ocean.
