His films tend to feature small-town America (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) or the sprawling vastness of Los Angeles (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive) and the dark underbelly that exists in each. Sound in his films is as important as the image, with each soundtrack being worked on with painstaking care. He has managed to establish himself as one of the few directors who have an instantly recognisable style and remains one of the finest filmmakers in operation.
