Dawn of the Dead

The Dawn of the Dead was the second film in George Romero's Living Dead series of films (after Night of the Living Dead). It was filmed in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. The plot concerns a small group of living humans who, after the collapse of society because of a zombie plague, create a sanctuary in a shopping mall. The film satirises and parodies materialism, and was followed by Day of the Dead.

The film is, to date, the most fiscally successful film ever released in the "horror" genre (based on cost to produce vs. profit). This is based partly on the fact that the film was edited in a plethor of ways to reflect what was popular in cinema based on regions of the world. For instance, many European versions were gorier and more dramatic than the American version, which was peppered with humour and cultural satire. In Belgium, an alternate ending featuring the grisly end of the heroine was put in place of the original ending.
