Geography
Delhi is located at 37°25'54" North, 120°46'51" West (37.431649, -120.780832)1. It lies across the Merced River from Livingston. Hilmar is to the west; Turlock to the north; and Ballico to the east.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.7 mi²). 12.0 km² (4.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Government
Delhi is an unincorporated area of Merced County. It has its own elementary and high school district, although many students choose to attend Livingston High School in the Merced Union High School District. Delhi is in the Turlock Irrigation District, which provides farm water and electrical service.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 8,022 people, 2,126 households, and 1,832 families residing in the town. The population density is 666.1/km² (1,725.2/mi²). There are 2,186 housing units at an average density of 181.5/km² (470.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 53.34% White, 1.70% African American, 1.00% Native American, 2.61% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 34.49% from other races, and 6.78% from two or more races. 55.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,126 households out of which 56.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 13.8% are non-families. 10.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.75 and the average family size is 4.00.
In the town the population is spread out with 37.0% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 14.9% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 102.1 males. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 98.6 men.
The median income for a household in the town is $41,629, and the median income for a family is $42,702. Males have a median income of $31,321 versus $19,777 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,960. 15.1% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.1% are under the age of 18 and 17.9% are 65 or older.
