In healthcare, discharge represents the end point of an inpatient hospital contact which consists of one or several days of care. In the First Nations Report (02-01), both inpatient hospital stays and surgical outpatient records are included. In addition, hospital separations do not include newborn separations, since this would essentially result in a double counting (the woman and the baby being discharged).
