Edward Mitchell Bannister was an American painter in the style of the FrenchBarbizon school who painted the New Englandlandscape. With few exceptions (he won a bronze medal at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial) Bannister was largely unknown because of the virulent racism of the times.
