Eluréd and Elurín were both named after their grandfather Elu Thingol, and their names meant 'Heir of Elu' and 'Remembrance of Elu'.
They had a younger sister Elwing.
The infants Eluréd and Elurín lived with their father in Menegroth, but during the Sack of Menegroth by the Sons of Fëanor they were siezed by evil men of Caranthir the Dark and left in the forest to die. When after the fact Maedhros, elder brother of Caranthir, learned of this act he sought for them, but never found them.
Their fate is uncertain: in the Silmarillion tradition it is said they were never found again (suggesting they starved to death), but tradition amongs the Nandor of Ossiriand held that they were led there by birds and beasts, and survived.
