Emomali Rahmonov

Emomali Rahmonov is the president of Tajikistan. He was elected chairman of the Supreme Council in 1992, after the resignation of Rahkmon Nabiyev. In 1994 he was elected to the newly created post of president, and was re-elected in 1999. In 2003 he put forward and won a referendum that would allow him to serve even more terms. The opposition alledge that this amendment was hidden in a way that verged upon electoral fraud.
