Freedom Party of Ontario
The Freedom Party of Ontario was founded in 1984 by a London, Ontario group that had split from the Ontario Libertarian Party. While sharing the OLP's libertarianism the new party differed on tactics and believed in community involvement and contesting local elections as a way of building support. The Fp has never elected anyone to the Ontario legislature and has been hurt by the success of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario under Mike Harris. The party has, however, been more successful than the Ontario Libertarian Party from which it split. Under Paul McKeever the party has been more willing to identify itself as conservative where previously it claimed to be neither left wing nor right wing. It has recently founded the Freedom Party of Canada to contest federal elections.
