Garak often described himself as a "plain and simple tailor", but from the beginning Doctor Julian Bashir suspected Garak had a lot to hide. Indeed, nothing Garak says can be assumed to be true, giving the writers some ease in changing his backstory as necessary.
Before the Cardassian withdrawal from Bajor, Garak was a spy for the Obsidian Order, the right hand of its leader Enabran Tain. At one point, Garak was officially a gardener at the Cardassian Embassy on Romulus. When Garak betrayed Tain, this resulted in his exile to Deep Space Nine. Later on, he fell in love with Tora Ziyal, Gul Dukat's illegitimate half-Bajoran daughter. In 2375, Garak helped out the Cardassian underground and thus helped in the defeat of the Dominion and was at last able to return to his homeworld.
