Garrison Dam

Garrison Dam is an earthen embankment dam on the Missouri River, between Riverdale and Pick City, North Dakota, about 80km (50 miles) northwest of Bismarck, North Dakota.

Built in 1956, the dam holds Lake Sakakawea, the third largest artificial reservoir in North America, and is a major hydroelectric power station.

Garrison, North Dakota is named after the dam. The creation of the lake displaced members of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, forcing the creation of New Town.
