Gary Doer
Gary Doer (March 31, 1948) is the current NDP Premier of Manitoba. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in 1986 and became Minister of Urban Affairs under premier Howard Pawley. Pawley's minority government was defeated in a Motion of No Confidence and he decided not to run for re-election. Pawley remained Premier during the election campaign but it was Doer who, as the new party leader, led the NDP campaign. The NDP failed to be re-elected and Gary Filmon became the Progressive Conservative Premier. For the next eleven years Doer served as leader of the opposition until in the 1999 election which was won by the NDP making Doer the new premier. He and his party were re-elected in 2003.
Doer's government has been moderate in tone and has lacked the major reforms of previous NDP governments.
