He was the grandson of Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan. In 1870, he joined the Grenadier Guards. In 1883, he married Ethel, daughter of the Earl of Bessborough. He held the positions of under-secretary for war 1900-2 and lieutenant-governor of the Isle of Man (1902). He was a prominent militia officer.
