In Barcelona he won the first Olympic medal for his newly independent country of Croatia. His ribbon promoted the checkerboard pattern of the Croatian coat of arms.
Ivanišević temporarily retired in the early 2000s but remained listed at the bottom of the ATP's ranklist. He returned to tennis in 2004.
