American Civil War
. His parents named him after
Alexander Hamilton
. He graduated from
Columbia College
in 1827 and was admitted to the New York bar in 1830. As a member of the
Whig party
, Fish served in the
House of Representatives
from 1843 until 1845. He was elected as governor of New York in 1849 and after becoming a
Republican
, he was elected to the Senate in 1851 where he served on the Foreign Relations Committee.
