Hammersmith & City Line

The Hammersmith and City Line is a line of the London Underground, coloured pink on the Tube map.

It was a branch of the Metropolitan Line until the 1980s. It was split off as a distinct line to simplify the network from the passengers' point of view.

The stretch between Paddington and Farringdon, opened in 1863, is the world's oldest underground railway still operational. (The world's first was the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel in New York.)
