Hampi, (anglicised from the original Hampe in the Kannada language) is a village within the bounds of the ruined city of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara empire, in northern Karnataka, India. The village was an original religious center, that may have predated the establishment of the city. It is still active, and includes the currently active Virupaksha temple. The village also contains several of the monuments of the old city, and extends into one of the old ceremonial streets of the ruins.
The principal industries of the village are agriculture, the support of the Virupaksha temple and some other local holy places in the vicinity, and increasingly, the tourist industry that has developed around the ruined city.
Hampi can be reached by a local 11km bus journey from the nearby town of Hospet.
The Ruins at Hampi constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
