High (atmospheric)

A high, or a high pressure area, is a region of descending atmospheric air. Highs are mesoscale atmospheric features, typically hundreds to thousands of kilometres in diameter. They form at mid-latitudes and polar regions as a result of air which has been uplifted at the equator and Horse latitudes, transported poleward, and cooled.

Light winds are generally associated with the presence of a high pressure area, and because they typically bring clear skies, they are frequently accompanied by temperature extremes in summer and winter.
