The first HMS Manchester was a hired vessel used in the role of a stores ship, these relatively mundane duties, are a complete contradiction to the present Manchester.
The second HMS Manchester (1937) was a light cruiser of 9,400 tons and commissioned in 1938. She was sunk in in 1942.
The current HMS Manchester (D95) is a Type 42 (Batch 3) destroyer that was commissioned in 1982. She participated in the 1991 Gulf War. In service as of 2004.
