Joachim Peiper

Joachim Peiper (also known as Jochen Peiper) was a Waffen-SS officer, who played a key role in the Malmédy massacre during the Ardennes Offensive of 1944.

After the end of World War II he was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to death by hanging. The sentence was later commuted to a short prison sentence, and after release went to live in Travès, in France. He was murdered in a fire bomb attack on his house on July 14 1976. The murderers were never caught - they are most widely suspected to be French Communists, but other theories have suggested former French Resistance fighters, or even a Jewish revenge squad carried out the attack.
