John Moore (general)

Sir John Moore (1761-1809) was a British soldier killed while leading a withdrawal at the Battle of Corunna. His military career included started with action in the American Revolutionary War. He also served in Corsica (1794), the West Indies (1795), Ireland (1798), Holland (1799), Egypt (1801), Sicily and Sweden (1802). When the Peninsular War began in 1808, Lieutenant General Moore accompanied the invasion of Spain. He was left in command of the withdrawing force and was killed leading them in the Battle of Corunna. In 1817, the poet Charles Wolfe commemorated his death in an epic poem "The Burial of Sir John Moore at Corunna".
