John Wintermeyer

John Joseph Wintermeyer (1916-1994) was an Ontario politician. First elected to the provincial legislature in 1955, Wintermeyer was chosen leader of the Ontario Liberal Party in 1957. In the 1959 general election he was able to lead the Liberals to a doubling of their seats from 10 to 21 against the ruling Ontario Progressive Conservative Party of Leslie Frost. Wintermeyer promoted policies such as such as universal medicare, improvements to general welfare assistance, amalgamation of Metropolitan Toronto and full funding of separate schools.

However, in the 1963 election Wintermeyer lost his seat of Waterloo North (despite his party having gained a net of two seats) and he resigned as party leader.

After leaving politics, Wintermeyer served as chair of the Metro Toronto Roman Catholic high schools and the Canadian Olympic Association.
