Josip Stolcer-Slavenski

Josip Štolcer-Slavenski (May 11th 1896 - November 30 1955) was a Croatian composer. He was born in Cakovec, Croatia in the Štolcer family. Here he attended the elementary school but later studied music in class of Zoltan Kodaly in Busapest - Budimpesta and Viteszlav Novak in Prague - Praha - Prag. He spent the time of of stusy in Paris, France.

Career

Štolcer's career started as that one of the music teacher in Zagreb in 1923 but soon in 1924 he moved to Belgrade where he happened to have better conditions to liv. Like another Croatian composer Jakov Gotovac he was national romantic who was under strong influence of regional and national heritage in his works. The sounds of home, its own history and heritage were in his works masterfuly expressed new secvence of the universal time. He was observing the sound heritage of the culures of the east hoping to find the environments unchanged by the influence of modern world.Josip Stolcer's Memorial Collection, established in 1965, contains original manuscripts and scores, tapes and records, as well as numerous other objects and musical instruments from the composer's home.

Opus

The best works of him are incorporated in simphony named Orienta for solists, the choir and orchestra as well with another simphony suite Balkanofonija. In his opus, there are piano concerts, the violin sonatas, string quartets, solo amd most knovn choir songs as Zvira voda and Romarska.
