Kojima Hideo

Hideo Kojima is the creator of the Metal Gear series, Snatcher, Policenauts, and the polemic Botkai (uses Solar Energy in a game). His games are highly regarded for their gameplay and storylines, often covering serious themes and issues.

Born on August 24th 1963 in Setagaya, Tokyo, he later moved to Kobe at the age of three. Initially having ambitions of becoming a film director, he joined the video game publisher Konami in 1986 as a designer. His first game, Metal Gear, was released on the MSX computer platform in 1987 to success. Featuring the hero Solid Snake, who has been sent to the fortress "Outer Heaven" to stop a nuclear equipped walking tank known as Metal Gear. The game set itself apart from others by being the first successful stealth-based game, as opposed to using direct confrontation. He later released Snatcher in 1988, a text-based adventure with a cyberpunk setting, which was later released on an number of different platforms and was acclaimed for it's storytelling.

Kojima later designed Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake in 1990, and Policenauts in 1994, both successes in Japan. But with the release of Metal Gear Solid in 1998 on the Sony PlayStation, Kojima soon became an international celebrity among gamers. Noted not only for it's well-designed gameplay, Metal Gear Solid was also highly regarded for it's characters and storyline, which featured themes of nuclear proliferation and genetic engineering.

Following the success of MGS, Kojima created the game and anime franchise Zone of the Enders, to moderate success.

In early 2000, Kojima released the first details of the sequel to Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on the Sony PlayStation 2. The game's highly detailed graphics, physics, and expanded gameplay quickly made it one of the most anticipated games ever. However, when the game was released in late 2001, it was criticized for it's character changes, twisting plot, and it's bizarre storyline and ending. Although it received universally high marks for it's gameplay and graphics engine, the poorly received storyline leaves it marked as a disappointment to most gamers.

As of this writing, Kojima is currently working on three projects. The first is Botkai, a game for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance where players take the role of a vampire hunter who uses a special gun which is charged by a solar cell on the game cartridge. The second is Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, a remake of the first Metal Gear Solid for the Nintendo Gamecube, with sequences redirected by action/horror film director Ryuhei Kitamura. And finally Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the Sony PlayStation 2, in which unlike other games in the series, is set sometime in the mid 1960's and involves wilderness survival.

Hideo Kojima is also currently Vice President of Konami Computer Entertainment Japan, Inc.
