Lactate dehydrogenase

Lactate dehydrogenase is a base formed in fermented milk. The base enzyme is also found in cerebrospinal fluid where it is clinically useful as a medical indicator.

High levels of lactate dehydrogenase in cerebrospinal fluid are often associated with bacterial meningitis. When high levels of the enzyme are found in cases of viral meningitis, encephalitis is often present and the progonsis is often poor.
