It is where José Bové lives and also where a massive meeting against the WTO took place in August 2003.
Larzac is an agricultural area, where sheep are bred to produce Roquefort cheese.
In October 1970, the French Minister of Defense, Michel Debré, decided without consulting the local population to extend the military camp. The farmers did not agree to this and decided to fight against the project. The extention was finally cancelled by president François Mitterrand after his election in 1981 following ten years of non-violent fighting.
Larzac is also the name of a commune in the Dordogne département of France.
