The town was founded as Heilsberg in the Teutonic Order state of Prussia in 1240 and in 1306 it became the seat for the imperial Prince-Bishop of Warmia (German Ermland) and remained his seat for 500 years.
Like whole Warmia, this town in 1772 was incorporated into Kingdom of Prussia.
In 1807 a battle took place at Heilsberg between the French under Murat and Soult and the Russians and Prussians under Bennigsen.
After World War II German inhabitants were expelled and the whole territory was given to Poland.
