Linseed oil
Linseed oil is an oil derived from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum, Linaceae). It is obtained by pressing, followed by an optional stage of solvent extraction.
Its uses include:
- Animal feeds
- Putty
- Sealants
- Caulking compounds
- Brake linings
- Linoleum
- Textiles
- Foundry products
- Leather treatment
- Polisheses, varnishes and oil paints
- Animal care products
- Wood preservation
The linoleic acid in linseed oil is used as a dietary supplement.
Safety Note: Rags soaked in linseed oil can self-ignite if stored in a confined space. They should be washed with water and disposed of carefully.
