Lithuanian nobility

Early Lithuanian rulers held the title of kunigaikštis (literally "high king"), which can be translated either "grand duke" or "king". Since Mindaugas the word karalius was used to specifically denote a king. "Karalius" is a Lithuanian derivative from "Carolus Magnus", Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, possibly under the Slavic influence (Polish: Król, Russian: Korol').
