He led a dissolute life, and spent some time in the army. His civil service career was interrupted by a period in jail. In 684 he joined the rebellion against Wu Zetian's assumtion of power, and was killed in its suppression.
He is best known for his poem "Ode to the Goose", said to have been written when he was seven years old.
