The Mali Empire was a Muslim Empire in West Africa in the 14th century. Its capital was Timbuktu.

The Empire was founded by the warrior king Sundiata. His grandson, Mansa Musa, was famous for his extravagant riches, as during his reign the Mali Empire was the source of almost half the world's gold.
