Marc-Antoine Charpentier

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (c. 1643 - 1704), composer.

Born in Paris, he went to Rome to study painting, but became the pupil of Giacomo Carissimi on hearing his music. He later worked with Molière after Molière's falling out with Jean-Baptiste Lully. His compositions include oratorios, masseses and operas.

The prelude of his Te Deum, a rondeau, is very well-known as the signature tune for Eurovision, heard in the opening credits of the Vienna New Year's Concert and the Eurovision Song Contest.
