Mass storage

Mass storage is a computing term to indicate the use of devices specifically designed for the storage of large amounts of data which may, or may not, be needed immediately. Examples include hard drives, tape drives, optical drives, and various drive libraries.

In computng history, earlier forms of mass storage entailed physical libraries of punch cards, and later, paper tapes, which were then replaced with near line storage media.
