Mississaugas

The Mississaugas are a native people located in Southern Ontario. The Mississaugas were driven off their land in 1847 and relocated to a reserve in the Grand River Valley area of Ontario. The city of Mississauga is named after them. An alternate spelling of the name is Missisauga. The Mississaugas are related to the larger Anishinabeg (also known as Ojibway or Chippewa) nation, and were called Mississauga by European settlers due to the fact that they traded along the Mississagi River (at the head of Lake Huron).
