Motherfucker (also contracted form: mofo and muthafucka) is a common insult in the English language, related to the widely condemned biological and cultural incest taboo. The term is popular in hip hop culture.
In recent years, "motherfucker" is increasingly being used to describe inanimate objects, dating back to early hip hop culture. An example from a song by Rockmaster Scott and the Dynamic Three, which has since become a hip hop cliché;
- The roof! The roof! The roof is on fire!
- We don't need no water, let the motherfucker burn!
- Burn! Burn! Motherfucker burn!
In spite of overuse, the term is widely considered highly insulting when used in earnest.
