The city of Edmonton is the musical center of the Prairie Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta; it is sometimes called the Nashville of the North due to the predominance of country music there. The Western Canadian Music Awards have been created to showcase artists from these provinces.
Aside from country, pop and rock performers, the Praire Provinces have produced First Nations singer-songwriter Buffy Saint-Marie from Saskatchewan and Jann Arden from Calgary and Joni Mitchell, as well as folk acts Andrea Menard and the Be Good Tanyas and hip hop crews like the Swollen Members. Rock bands include The Weakerthans, Ian Tyson, The Guess Who and Wide Mouth Mason.
